Illinois woman survives encounter with jumping spotted eagle ray (200-pound fish strikes tourist)

ISLAMORADA— A spotted eagle ray that made spectacular leaps from the turquoise waters of Islamorada on Friday gave an Illinois family an unforgettable fish tale to take home from their Florida vacation. The Hausch family was enjoying an eco-tour boat ride on Friday afternoon when the 200-pound spotted eagle ray with a 5.5-foot wing span that they were photographing leaped into their boat and struck Jenny Hausch in the chest, officials said. "She was not harmed and managed to get out from under it," said Officer Robert Dube of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Division. Hausch was with...

Longtime Pennsylvania state senator indicted

SCRANTON - A federal grand jury has indicted longtime State Sen. Raphael J. Musto, the latest legislator to be caught up in an overlapping series of corruption investigations. The indictment announced Tuesday alleges that Musto (D., Luzerne), 81, accepted bribes, gifts, and construction work from an unnamed contractor in return for his help in obtaining state grants and loans. Known as "Ray," Musto, who is to retire next week after 38 years in the General Assembly, has been a political fixture in the state's northeastern region since 1972, when he succeeded his father to a seat in the state House.

Another Publisher Out at Entertainment Weekly

Just when Entertainment Weekly seemed to be rolling the boulder back up the hill, Time Inc. told EW staff this morning that its publisher of the last two years, Ray Chelstowski, is leaving. Mr. Chelstowski informed Paul Caine, president and group publisher of the Style & Entertainment Group at Time Inc., that he has decided to leave EW, Mr. Caine said in a staff memo. No successor was named. "I will be communicating a plan shortly, and my door is open should you have any thoughts or suggestions," said Mr. Caine, himself a former EW publisher.

Ray LaHood: Obama’s Power-Mad Cell Phone Czar

My column today shines light on the autocratic agenda of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Readers of Culture of Corruption already know all about this Chicago crony porker’s ties to Rahm Emanuel, Richard Daley, Rod Blagojevich, and Tony Rezko. For a trenchant look at LaHood’s penchant for government coercion and central planning, see chapter one of Terry Jeffrey’s Control Freaks. Ray LaHood: Obama’s Power-Mad Cell Phone Czar By Michelle Malkin • November 19, 2010 09:40 AM He’s got hang-ups. Reporting from Los Angeles and Denver - Self-help guru James Arthur Ray was arrested Wednesday and charged with three counts of manslaughter in connection with an Arizona sweat lodge ceremony that left three people dead in October. ... Life of Obama's Childhood Friend Takes Drastically Different Path

In his best-selling autobiography, "Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance," presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., writes movingly about his high school best friend, whom he calls "Ray." Ray's real name is Keith Kakugawa. And Kakugawa's life could not have veered more starkly from that of his old friend, the presidential candidate. Kakugawa is currently homeless in Los Angeles, sleeping in the beat-up Mazda of his friend Jason Myles. He has been in and out of prison for the past few decades, mostly on charges related to cocaine possession and dealing. "To be honest with you,...

Gamma-Ray Burst Aimed Directly at Earth

A massive gamma-ray burst detected last March, believed to be the brightest ever seen, turns out to have been aimed directly at the Earth. A narrow jet that drove material toward us at 99.99995 of the speed of light is revealed in the data, itself wrapped within a somewhat slower and wider jet. The best estimates are that an alignment like this occurs only once every ten years. Says Paul O’Brien (University of Leicester, and a member of the team working on the Swift satellite): “We normally detect only the wide jet of a GRB as the inner jet is...

Marine, Back from Iraq, Shot Dead in His Home Town

CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) -- On leave from the violence he had survived in the war in Iraq, a young Marine was so wary of crime on the streets of his own home town that he carried only $8 to avoid becoming a robbery target. Despite his caution, Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, 21, was shot point-blank in the neck during a robbery at a bus stop. Feeding and breathing tubes kept him alive 41/2 months, until he died of an infection on May 18. Two men have been charged in the attack, and Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason said Friday the...
